Coaches Corner

When a team has heart and fire in their bellies, anything happen. This past weekend our kids played harder than I have ever seen. “I thought they left everything on the field the previous week at Benedictine.,” said Head Coach Mark Pinzone. “I was wrong, they had more to give at North Royalton. Our kids were banged up, injured, hurt, all of the above. Somehow, they found the will to win.” So many of our kids have to play both ways that it becomes difficult to finish games in the end. We have had that problem all year. On Friday night, the players finished. They didn’t just “get” their first win, they “Earned” it. Now we have to see what our team is really made up of. We are a little banged up right now. Any time you go to triple overtime, its like you played almost a whole other game. We have to see if our players and our leaders have the intestinal fortitude to string some- thing together and start winning in our league play. “I am excited to see how our team responds to some of our recent success,” added Pinzone. “I hope they remain disciplined and focused.”

Featured Player of the Week

Two junior players have continuously stepped up to help this team improve and certainly showed up last weekend against Padua. Junior quarterback, Mike Messina has shown that he can indeed be a high school quarterback. After losing starting senior quarterback, Allan Medovic to a broken collarbone, Messina has worked hard to lead the Green Wave on offense. “Mikey is not blessed with very much speed, but he makes up for it with his ability to throw and to lead the offense efficiently,” says head coach Mark Pinzone. “Mike has really done a great job since we shoved him in there in week #1. I am proud of him and have enjoyed watching him mature on the field.”

Yet another junior who had gained a bit of celebrity status of late is tight end Nate Vollman. Vollman caught the key 20 yard touchdown in overtime play last weekend against Padua. With the help of the defense stopping Pad- ua’s final attempt to convert a two pointer, Vollman helped seal the deal. “Nate Vollman is a bit of a rock star at Holy Name right now,” said Coach Pinzone. “When I walked into the school after the Padua game, you would of thought Elvis Presley was in the building. It seemed like every girl at Holy Name was around Vollman. I’m sur- prised they didn’t ask for his autograph,” added Pinzone.

Great Job Mike and Nate! Keep up the good work and GO GREEN WAVE!!!
