Laura Bednar | The Name
The new athletic field near the back parking lot of the school has been a long time coming. Construction began in April of 2012.
John Thomas, parent of Holy Name student and track team member Natasha Thomas, proposed the idea of building an area for the shot put and discus throwers on the track team to practice.
John Thomas is doing most of the work himself with a generous donation of dirt from Fabrizi Construction Company. The cost will be somewhere between $10,000 and $20,000.
As John Thomas began construction, the athletic board realized that the large amount of space could be turned into a new practice field, in addition to the area for shot put and discus.
Athletic director Mr. Jack Richardson said, “I am excited for the sports teams not to have to go outside of Holy Name to practice.”
The football, soccer, track, and lacrosse teams will all be able to use this field as well as the marching band and physical education classes.
The old practice field will still be used for the freshman football team and the JV soccer teams.
Grass will be planted over the next few weeks and it is projected that the field will be done by mid-October.IEL
