The road to Regionals has not been an easy one for Holy Name or a likely one, for that matter.
Approximately one month ago, the Green Wave had a record of 5-9 and a strong District run is something few predicted to be on the horizon.
But, this is high school baseball.
Holy Name found its stride in the second half of the season racking up wins against the likes of Independence, Notre Dame Cathedral-Latin and Mentor Lake Catholic.
The Green Wave defeated Brookside 4-3 May 14 and then Oberlin Firelands 7-4 May 20 to earn their place in the District Final against Benedictine. Holy Name beat the Bengals 8-6 to claim the Lorain District Championship.
Holy Name won each of those district contests after trailing at some point in the game.
“We’re peaking at the right time,” said Holy Name Head Coach Dennis Markiewicz. “We don’t get rattled going against good teams. I attribute that largely to the leadership of our seniors.”
The Green Wave are 15-12 entering their Regional Semifinal game against Defiance (27-1), which is ranked the No. 1 team in the state by The Associated Press, at 5 p.m. today at Tiffin University.
Holy Name will send pitcher Dave Javoor to the mound to match up against Defiance’s Robert Ziegler whose fastball is known to flirt with the 90 MPH mark.
Javoor started for the Green Wave in the District Final win over Benedictine.
Markiewicz said he knows his team is the underdog but does not let that effect his outlook on the team’s chances or the outlook of his players.
“You’ve got to have faith in your teammates and yourself,” Markiewicz said. “The way we’ve been playing, we might shock people
