Tim Sullivan Coach of the Year

Head Varsity Hockey Coach Tim Sullivan was named the 2015 Liberty Ford Men’s Coach of the Year, which comes with $7,500 that will go to Holy Name! Coach Sullivan also received a big screen TV.

Coach Sullivan was initially nominated for the award in October 2015. He was selected in mid-October as one of three finalists in the Men’s Coach of the Year category. Coach Sullivan earned his spot in the final three after the sponsor chose him based on the following judging criteria: Coaching excellence, sportsmanship and integrity, and commitment to the community. Voting was then open to the public during part of October and throughout November.

The final decision was announced on Thursday, January 14, 2016 during a ceremony at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse. Coach Sullivan’s wife, Kelly, as well as Principal Shelbrey Blanc and Assistant Principal Karen Carter, were there to help him celebrate this wonderful award.

Coach Sullivan began the existing Holy Name hockey program during the 2003-2004 school year. Since then, he has built the team into one of the premier programs in Northeast Ohio. During the 2006-2007 season, the team won the prestigious Baron Cup III. They were the Division I Brooklyn District Runner-Up, as well as the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League (GCHSHL) Red Division Title winners, in 2013. Because of all his efforts, and his dedication to Holy Name, Coach Sullivan was inducted into the Holy Name Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach in 2011.

The hockey team is now a member of the tough Great Lakes Hockey League (GLHL), which was established at the start of the 2013-2014 season. Coach Sullivan was the inaugural GLHL Coach of the Year in 2014, and continues to be a great leader for a program that now features both varsity and JV teams. He makes sure his team remains involved in the community, as his players have worked with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, the American Red Cross, and local youth hockey programs. This year, the team hosted its annual Santa Skate at Parma’s Ries Rink, where members of the community could skate with Santa for free and could rent skates for $3. They also collected jars of peanut butter and donations for the Parma Peanut Butter Drive, which benefits the All Faiths Pantry.

Along with his coaching duties, Coach Sullivan is a history teacher at Holy Name.

We congratulate Coach Sullivan on his award, and thank him for all of his contributions to the Holy Name Community!

Spiritual: Students Participate in Pro-Life Mass and Rosary at Cathedral

More than 100 students attended the Mass for Life at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Friday, January 22. The Mass, attended by nearly 550 other Cleveland-area Catholic high school students and Pro-Life supporters, had a standing room-only congregation and was celebrated on the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion in the United States. Diocese of Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon led the Mass, which recognized the gift of human life, as well as how important it is to cherish and respect it.

After the Mass, Holy Name students led the congregation in a Rosary for Life, and prayed for the unborn.

This is the second Pro-Life Mass Holy Name students have been involved in this school year. In October, students joined fellow Catholic high school students at the Cathedral for Mass, and then marched to The Free Stamp for a Pro-Life Rally. While there, students talked about respecting all people throughout the community and the world.

We pray our students continue to believe in the sanctity of life, and see the difference the power of prayer can make in the world.

Future members of the Class of 2020 were recognized at a scholars reception for their exceptional performance on the Holy Name Placement Exam. All students honored have been offered scholarships for the 2016-2017 school year.

During the reception that took place in early January, Principal Shelbrey Blanc ’95 and Assistant Principal Karen Carter presented each student in attendance with a certificate of merit. Maureen Joyce, a current senior, then spoke about her time as a Holy Name student, sharing that she has been inspired to study music education next year due to her experiences in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities.

Rebecca Dreher ’10 also talked to the students and their families, explaining that Holy Name gave her the foundation to succeed as both an undergraduate student-athlete at Division I Indiana University, and as a current first-year dental student at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

We congratulate all of our Class of 2020 Scholars, and are very proud of their accomplishments!
