Fall 2018

Class of 1936

Elizabeth Walker Pumphrey celebrated her 100th birthday in August, and passed away on November 12, 2018. Her favorite time in her life and best memories were from her days at Holy Name High School. Before she passed, she said, “We were all friends. It did not matter what part of the city you came from, we were all one Holy Name.”

After graduating from Holy Name, Br. Christopher (Kenneth) Neuman received his master’s degree in social work and worked for 30 years with special needs children. He is now retired and living in the Franciscan Community in Cicero, IL. His hobbies are walking in the forest preserves and riding his bike along Lake Michigan.

The class of 1958 held their 60th reunion at Creekside Restaurant on Saturday, July 28. Everyone enjoyed themselves and asked that we plan an 80th birthday party in 2020.

Sheldon Firem is a retired school psychologist who enjoys playing Irish music. He is also a Chardon Schools Board of Education member.

Duane Piscura was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Softball Hall of Fame. In summer 2017, the class of 1967 celebrated their 50-year reunion.

A good time was had by all the weekend of August 24, 2018 at the 50th class reunion of the great class of 1968. On Friday night, the class met at Sully’s in Medina for a re-meet and greet. Classmate and owner, John Sullivan, provided a wonderful spread and we partied until the wee hours.

On Saturday, a dinner/dance was held at Brennan’s. A total of 104 attended, which included three teachers. We had classmates come from as far away as California. The night included great food, dancing, trivia and reminiscing.

On Sunday morning, we met at Holy Name Church on Broadway for Mass. After Mass, we had donuts and coffee, and went on a tour of the Carroll Building.

The committee of Linda Brodzinski Horvath, Carla Rossi Dickard, Kathy Powers Neary, Mary Ellen McCafferty, Petra Hartman Lynch, Rudy Kenik, Glenn Dyer, Jack Dempsey, Paul Rybak, Tim Augustine, Bob Serwatka, Dan Telzrow, Jim Rozak and John Sullivan met monthly to plan this event.

John Banaszak was inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in Quantico, Virginia. Laura Brucks is proud to announce the appointment of her son, Fr. Donald Oleksiak to the ecclesiastical office of vicar general and also to the ecclesiastical office of moderator of the curia of the Diocese of Cleveland. Dennis Kebrdle has been the managing partner of Chikol Equities, a management consulting turnaround firm for the last 20 years. Previously, Kebrdle had been a part of a number of purchases of manufacturing companies for about 20 years. Frank Lucician works 20 to 25 hours weekly as executive director of All Souls Housing Corporation, a Washington, DC 501c3 non-profit that is preserving and developing affordable housing for less fortunate families. Rosemary Cooper Miller is a retired registered nurse. Susan Sobiech Peters is a loving grandmother.

Brenda Saunders Sprague is the deputy assistant secretary for passport services at the U.S. Department of State. She has worked at the State Department for 45 years.

Class of 1972

Paul Novosel is a professional musician and works as an accompanist at The Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York. Last year, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall.

Class of 1975

Class of 1976

Robert Satonik is the campus assistant dean for clinical curriculum at the Augusta University/ University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens, Georgia.

Class of 1981

Elizabeth Becka, who writes under the name Lisa Black, released a new book in 2018 called “Perish.” Michele Magold Marcus is an administrator for the Cleveland Clinic Departments of Neurosurgery and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation; Center for Spine Health.

Class of 1982

Monica Blaizgis is a customer service manager (North America) for Think Outside, a home and garden decor company based in Sydney, Australia.

Class of 1983

Kenneth Dombroski is a civil engineer at McMillen Jacobs Associates where he serves as the central region vice president. He is responsible for the firm’s operations in Cleveland, Columbus, Chicago, Nashville, and Pittsburgh. Mary Kortan is engaged to David Cooley.

Class of 1986

Nancy Bulanda Tabar is the music director at St Anthony of Padua Church, an outreach assistant at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and a costumer at Cassidy Theater.

Class of 1987

Todd Kelly retired from United States Air Force. Christine Sromek Laforet is pleased to announce the publication of the Being Bree chapter book series for children, including “Bree and the Nametag Worries” and “Bree and the Loose Tooth Worries.”

Class of 1992

In January 2018, Pat Chun was named the Director of Athletics at Washington State University. Corey Roscoe is the Ohio director of The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization. Through lobbying and grassroots advocacy, he has helped pass state and local animal protection legislation in Ohio. He is also the campaign director for Stop Puppy Mills Ohio.

Michael and Maria Zachary Kyffin had a baby named Julian Alexander. Alan Snow is a professor at Wayne College – The University of Akron. He teaches several biology courses. Maria Zachary is a critical care registered nurse at The MetroHealth System. Since high school, she has also been teaching skiing at Boston Mills Brandywine. Dave Zelenka is the senior director of development at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida.

Denise Karr Bales is a human resources specialist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She also is an assistant volleyball coach at Saint Bridget. David Dobrovich is an AT&T technician. Brian Letner is a registered nurse in the University Hospitals of Cleveland Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). He is married to classmate Hayley Garsteck ’99.

David Hoffart is working as an IT senior systems administrator for Nook Industries. Jason and Theresa Talboo McElroy had a baby named Grace. Matthew Nowakowski works at First Federal Lakewood. Michelle Sestak has been working as an application scientist in the thin films division at Horiba Scientific. Michelle and her husband, Ryan Shoemaker, also welcomed baby Lucas Alexander into their family.

Dana Moderick is a forensic liaison for the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Sarah Luedeke Clay is an audit manager for Evolent. David Linderman bought a house, and is now married to Carrie Baur. Matt Zelasko is now married to Katie McNamara.

Sean McCafferty is a systems administrator at FIS Global. Stephanie Winemiller graduated from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego in 2015 and passed the California Bar Exam in 2016. She will complete a master of science degree in psychology in December 2018 from Tiffin University. She is currently living and working in Silicon Valley as a trial attorney for Allstate. Outside of work, she is a volunteer crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line and is training to run her second marathon.

Emily Day ’08 is engaged to Joe Grace. Kevin Malloy is an Army medic at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He and his wife, Sarah, welcomed baby Lincoln James in to their family recently.

Matthew Bambauer graduated from the Akron Police Academy in December 2016. He is currently a police officer in Cleveland Heights. Erik Larson is a registered nurse in the emergency department at The MetroHealth System.

Class of 2010

Valerie Hudak is an intervention specialist at Brunswick High School. Over the past 6 years, she has been volunteering at Camp Quality Ohio, which is a camp for children with cancer. Dr. Alexandra Myhal, who recently graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has accepted a position as a veterinarian at a 17-doctor dairy practice in the Central Valley of California. She is excited to start her career and to contribute to the production of high quality dairy products. Dana Bura Stachowiak and her husband Josef recently welcomed baby Emma Patricia in to their family.

Colin Cunningham purchased his first home in Fall 2018. Lauren Duff obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biochemistry, with a minor in microbiology and research distinction in biochemistry from The Ohio State University. She is now working towards a master of education degree from John Carroll University. Jenna Rowan is now married to Michael Kekic.

Meg O’Gorman recently became an inside sales consultant with the Cleveland Browns.

Sean Fitzgerald is now a resident assistant (RA) in the honors residence halls of Stopher and Johnson Halls at Kent State University. Along with becoming an RA, Sean has a show on Black Squirrel Radio. In 2017, he hosted Fitz on Sports, and then in 2018 a show called Fitz and Spinell.

Marguerite Cunningham celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by her nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, many of whom are fourth generation Holy Name graduates or current students!

Army veteran John Sazpansky was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame last fall.

Class of 1964

Natalie Plocica has been retired from Southwest General Hospital for several years now and moved to Meadville, PA to live near family.

Class of 1967

Sharon Nawalaniec was elected by the Hiram College faculty in recognition of merit and accomplishment to the 2017 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges. Sharon transferred from Rollins College in Orlando, Florida where she was elected to Sigma Tau Delta the International English Honors Society; Alpha Sigma Lambda the Honor Society for Adult Learners in Higher Education and The National Society Of Collegiate Scholars for commitment to the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. She currently holds the position of Director of Education and Training for the Exercise Safety Association, an international membership association that she founded in 1978, where she served as international trainer and conference speaker for 30 years and continues to conduct research, train fitness professionals, and write books and articles for health and fitness teachers. She has been blessed with two daughters and two grandsons and currently lives in Maitland, Florida. Robert Ziccardi has retired.

Tim Augustine wants to hear from fellow classmates. In particular, he is looking for ideas and volunteers for the Class of 1968’s 50th reunion, which he hopes will happen in summer 2018. Carol Fantelli lives in North Carolina and is a freelance writer/film set stylist. Celeste German-Gornick has retired. Paul Krzeminski works for Renewal by Andersen. Joanne Szydlowski is the Lead Analytical Chemist, Senior Chromatographer for PolyOne Corporation in Avon Lake.

Tony Drockton is the chief executive officer and executive creative director at American luxury handbag brand Hammitt Los Angeles.

Class of 1985

Kevin Laviano recently received a 2017 Wings of Excellence Award from the Cleveland Federal Executive Board. Kevin is a Division Director (Finance and Capital Management Division) for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Scott McCafferty’s company, WTWH Media, was ranked 3500 on Inc. magazine’s Inc. 5000 list. This is the seventh consecutive year WTWH has been included on this list, which annually ranks America’s fastest-growing private companies. Ron Oscher is the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for AMETEK, Inc. based in Berwyn, PA.

Maria Pallotta is a colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. She also is the director of the experiential leadership development center, LEAD Division at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Thomas Washington retired from the United States Army in 2011, and is now working at Tradesmen International as a project coordinator.

Peter Grasson is the Division Environmental Health and Safety Manager at Tremco Inc.

Willie Jenks is the visiting clubhouse manager for the Cleveland Indians.

Class of 2001

Adam Bostwick won an episode of The Food Network’s hit TV show, “Chopped.” Along with now being a Chopped champion, Adam is the chef and owner at Cork & Cleaver in Broadview Heights.

Alison Dusenbury Gerhard is a teacher in the Diocese of Cleveland. Steve Ibrahim owns two Aladdin’s Eatery restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a third location opening in Spring 2018. Lindsay Baker Minch is married to classmate Jim, and they have two children. Lindsay works in communications for PNC Bank, while Jim is an electrician for the city of Cleveland. Kerry Butanowicz Tompkins is an occupational therapist and hobby farmer. She is married with two children.

Justin Zavatchen is the Assistant Hockey Coach at Strongsville Youth Hockey Club. He is also an Account Executive of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Region for Load 1 Transportation and Logistics.

Andrea Klonowski Zabor is a stay-at-home mom to her toddler, Cecilia, and twin baby girls, Felicity and Clare. She and her husband are actively involved at St. Charles Parish in Parma, where they help coordinate the Pre-Cana program for engaged couples.

Class of 2013

Last fall, Daniel Cunningham was inducted into Baldwin Wallace University’s Dayton C. Miller Honor Society, which is achieved by less than four percent of the BW undergraduate student body. Shannon Halloran is pursuing her Doctorate of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Nora Kornelakis is working at JP Morgan Chase & Co. in New York City as a financial analyst. Callie Scott was the 2017 West Side Irish American Club’s Queen. Her friend and classmate, Meghan Adams, was on her court. Meghan also had her own success in the Irish community this year, as she was selected as the 2017 Ohio Rose of Tralee, and traveled to Ireland to compete in the Rose of Tralee International Festival in August.

Class of 2014

Thomas Gliebe earned second place in Investopedia’s first ever Market Madness Investing Challenge. The competition was powered by Investopedia’s Stock Simulator. Students were provided with $50,000 in virtual cash, with prizes given to the three highest percentage gainers for use in investment funds.

Fall 2016

Class of 1947

Martha Lang Patton remembers going to the 1946 Charity Game versus Cathedral Latin, a game that is celebrating its 70th anniversary and is still known for having the second-largest attendance at an American football game (70,955) in history. Martha and her friends went to the game, sitting in the highest seats since the stadium was packed. Although Holy Name lost the game, Martha remembers it fondly, and eventually married a Latin grad, the late Bernard Patton, in 1950.

The Class of 1950 held their annual reunion Sunday, September 25, 2016. The event this year was lunch at Carrie Cerino’s in North Royalton. The class plans to return to this venue Sunday, September 24, 2017.

Sam Scopellite is semi-retired, but still working part-time as a plumber.

Class of 1953

Sr. Therese Horan, O.S.U., celebrated her Diamond Jubilee Anniversary as an Ursuline Sister. A Mass was held in honor of this occasion on August 27, 2016 at Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish in Brook Park. Afterwards, a reception took place in the church hall. Fellow Namers who attended were Jean Kader ’53 and Gerald ’53 Boldt, Lillian Pelko ’52 and Gerald ’53 Cunningham, the late John Farone ’52, Beth Gallagher ’52 and Bryan ’53 Powers and Sr. Sharon Anne Yanak, C.S.A. ’53.

Fr. Donald Cozzens was the featured commencement speaker at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, CA this past May. During commencement, Fr. Cozzens received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.

Class of 1961

The Class of 1961 celebrated their 55-Year Reunion at the All-School Reunion at Holy Name High School on June 10. Classmates Rose Burke and George Armbruster came in from Colorado, and Mary Kay McFadden Willa came in from Florida. A great time was had by all. Class of 1962

Robert J. Cermak retired from the Cleveland Division of Police in 1999, and last served as the commander of the Bureau of Special Investigation. He retired from Cuyahoga County in 2010, where he worked as the senior manager of the Public Safety Division.

Class of 1966

Fifty years after his own graduation from Holy Name, Tom Joyce celebrated the graduation of another ‘Thomas Joyce’ – his grandson, Tommy. Tommy was a member of the Class of 2016, and is now studying at Cleveland State University. At graduation, Tommy was able to process in with his cousin and his grandfather’s niece, Maureen Joyce, a fellow 2016 graduate.

Timothy Krolikowski is retired from Holy Name, but remains active at St. Ambrose Church in Brunswick.

Marty Surella and his family recently took pictures to celebrate his birthday. The photographer, Emily Jones, took a special Holy Name photo, featuring Marty, his children, Matt ’87 and Laura Surella Calaiacovo ’88, and his grandchildren, Mary Calaiacovo ’16 and Joe Calaiacovo ’18.

Edward Craft became a volunteer for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad as a trainman in 2015.

Fr. Dennis Bogusz recently celebrated 25 years on WEDO 810 in McKeesport, Pennyslvania, where he does a weekly show called “Echoes of Poland.” It can be heard online at www.frdennis.wedo810.com.

Class of 1973

Last fall, Andy Krakowiak went to Washington, DC as a special guest of U.S. Congressman Jim Jordan to represent Ohio’s fourth congressional district during Pope Francis’s address of the U.S. Congress. During the Pope’s address, Andy sat in the gallery of the Capitol Building. Andy was chosen to go after Congressman Jordan’s Chief of Staff, Ray Yonkura ’90, recommended him to the congressman as someone who has positively impacted students in Ohio.

Margaret McCarthy is enjoying life in paradise (Florida). She is semi-retired after owning a PR/marketing company in Colorado for 16 years.

Over 30 women in the Class of 1975 have reconnected through a closed Facebook Page. As a group, they attend plays, baseballs games and concerts, are planning a girls’ weekend to celebrate their 60th Birthdays, and meet up just to share a little girl talk. They invite other ladies from ’75 to connect as well. Lisa Black (Elizabeth Becka ’81) released a new book in April. The book is titled That Darkness. Lew Hodgett recently retired from a career in engineering.

Janet Dunn Kovachic is working in the health insurance and retirement income planning fields. She also has a real estate license.

David Chmielewski is a restaurant general manager. WTWH Media, LLC Co-Founder and Managing Partner Scott McCafferty was named a 2016 Northeast Ohio EY Entrepreneur Of The Year® Finalist earlier this year.

Dr. Margaret Farrar is the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at John Carroll University.

Gary Zielinski is an RN at Rosary Hall, St. Vincent Hospital.

Marc A. Majers recently graduated with a Master of Science in Information Architecture & Knowledge Management with an emphasis in user experience design from Kent State University. He is a professional software designer.

David Abshire is a trainer for State Farm Insurance in Tempe, Arizona. Rena Scalish Galeti is the owner of Galeti Insurance Solutions. Julie Meier is a Civil Engineer Corps Officer in the US Navy, stationed in Washington, DC.

Dave Grasha is working for the Cleveland Police Department. He is also coaching soccer in Medina.

Amanda Ehrbar Flanagan married Kevin Flanagan on September 3, 2016. Members of the bridal party included her sisters, Grace ’09 and Mary ’15, brothers Bill ’08 and John ’13 and cousin Rebecca Dreher Petts ’10, as well as friends Dorothy DiMarino ’06, Krysten Cotone Jasin ’06 and Bridget Dolan Sison ’06.
