For NAMERs, sports mean more than joining a team — it is about becoming the best version of yourself, building confidence, developing life-long friendships, representing your school, and working together to create a winning culture and atmosphere.
Our athletics programs feature something for everyone, with a wide range of high-performing sports teams to join. Some programs are co-ed, while others field separate boys and girls teams. Under the direction of Holy Name Athletic Director Richard Kozub, ’01, Green Wave coaches mentor and instruct student-athletes in the following sports:
Excellence in sports is not something that just comes naturally. Dedication, discipline, and serious practice are ingredients for student-athlete success. What's more, teamwork and movement are two vital aspects of any student's life and joining a high school sports team is one of the best ways to hone your skills and get the most out of your educational experience.
Committing to a team at Holy Name High School provides the following advantages.
Exercise, sleep, and diet are the foundational pillars of a healthy body and mind. Pushing yourself to be the best in practice, during tryouts, and out on the field releases endorphins and helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Plus, taking care of your body makes you feel good about yourself and contributes to a strong sense of self-esteem.
Sports have specific rules you need to follow, and a team is overseen by a coach you listen to and respect. You learn that practice and hard work are the best ways to reach your goals and achieve your dreams, which can carry over to other aspects of your life.
And having the discipline to work hard in school and on the field does not preclude an active social life; athletes usually have a large group of friends as well.
Those who play high school sports are often high achievers. This is because sports instill an array of values, such as the importance of teamwork, how to lead a team, emotional regulation, and the power of hard work.
Educational institutions and future employers are most interested in individuals who can demonstrate their aptitude through academic and sporting achievements. Being a member of a varsity high school athletics team is a great addition to your resume that can make it stand out for all the right reasons.
